The work of freelance writer, columnist, and editor, Mary Helen Darah, has appeared in numerous publications including the Toledo Blade, Toledo City Paper, Bedford Press, Sylvania Advantage, Boomers and Beyond, Toledo Area Parent, Ann Arbor Family, Findlay Area Family and Pittsburgh Family. She was awarded “Runner-Up, Best of Toledo” by readers of the Toledo City Paper in the “print journalist” category in 2011 and 2013 and won “Toledo’s Best Print Journalist” in 2012.
Mary Helen has been honored by the American Cancer Society and EPIC for her work and inspiration as a breast cancer survivor and has written annual articles for the Susan G. Komen of Northwest Ohio newsletter and the Toledo Blade regarding survivorship and the Race for the Cure since 2009. Mary Helen was also awarded “Finalist” in the “Humor Columnist” category by the national Parenting Media Association for her column “Mother Mayhem” in 2013 and won “Silver” nationally in the same category in 2014. She also appears regularly on Rebecca Regnier’s Full Plate on 13abc.
“The Mother of Mayhem” has a continual source of material through interactions with daughters Lauren, a graduate student and medical ICU nurse at ProMedica Toledo Hospital; Helena, a special educator and columnist; and Maria, a junior in the college of business at the University of Toledo. International student, May Liu from China, has lived with the “mayhem” for the past four years and will be heading off to college in the fall of 2015.
Mary Helen looks forward to writing and sharing the stories of members of our community who turn the ordinary into the extraordinary. In addition, as “The Mother of Mayhem”, she will continue her quest to find the remote, a working phone charger and “a dull moment” while delivering a dose of what she feels is the best medicine: Laughter.
